The Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch is one of the most popular ultra books and you will find that it gives you a lightweight model but is sturdy enough to take with you anywhere.

Design

The design of the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch is very good and it looks the part! The case uses carbon fiber and this is embedded through a moulded plastic frame and lid that will give this Ultrabook extra strength.

You will also find that this is very slim and it is even slimmer than other models measuring only 0.73 by 13.03 by 8.94 inches. It is also very light and only weighs 3.15 pounds. The display is a 14 inch display which is a little larger than you normally see on an Ultrabook of this size.

You will also get a 180 degree hinge which lets you fold down the display flat if you need too. In terms of the quality it is VERY good you will have a high resolution 2560 by 1440 panel which will give you great color quality and viewing angles.

You will also get decent speakers with a two 1-watt stereo speakers that are enhanced with Dolby Digital Home Theater sound processing.

The Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch will also give you a very good keyboard that is easy to use and this has sculpted keys – you will find them easier to use than the standard flat topped keys. You will find that the layout of the keyboard is fairly standard but there is one change with the location of the Home and End keys replacing the Caps lock key entirely.

In the center of the keyboard you will find the TrackPoint and you will get right and left buttons just below the spacebar.

Another really nice feature with the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch is the fingerprint reader and the clickpad mouse has been updated also, this results in a deeper click so it is easier to tell when you have actually clicked on something.

The functions keys have been replaced and this is now called the ‘Adaptive Function Row’. It gives you embedded touch and a backlit liquid crystal display that is protected by Gorilla Glass.

PROS:
  • Very slim and light – can literally take this anywhere.
  • High resolution display – 2560 by 1440
  • Intel Core i5 processor
  • Solid state drive for fast performance

CONS:
  • Function bar can be a little annoying with simple functions
  • New keyboard layout
  • Ethernet requires dongle
  • Short battery life

Features

With the Lenovo X1 Thinkpad Carbon Touch being an ultrabook it is of course thin and this does put a limit on the amount of ports and connections but that will be the case with any ultrabook. You will find that you have the Kensington lock slot, a USB 3.0 port, a micro Ethernet port and you will also have a power connector that you can also use for the OneLink Pro Dock that is sold separately.

There is also a mini DisplayPort and a HDMI port as well.

You can also use mobile broadband with the Lenovo X1 Thinkpad Carbon Touch and there is a SIM card slot on the back of the system offering optional 4G capabilities.

Now let us have a look at what is inside the Lenovo X1 Thinkpad Carbon Touch:

You will get a 128mb solid state drive and this will give you a decent amount of space if you are dealing with photos and documents, if you are dealing with video that will fill up very quickly.

You will get Windows 8.1 Professional as standard and you will also have a few programs and apps that come pre-installed. You will be able to install a 30 day trial of Norton Studio, Dragon Nuance Assistant and Evernote and Skitch.

You will also get Amazon Kindle Reader, Accuweather, and Rara music.

Performance

For performance you get an Intel Core 4200U processor with a dual core 1.6GHz CPU paired with 8GB of RAM. You will find that this gives you really fast media processing and in a benchmark test the Lenovo X1 Thinkpad Carbon Touch did very well.

The only downside is the on board graphics which is a HD Graphics 4400 intergrated solution so if you are using video editing software this can be a bit underpowered.

The battery lasts for 4 hours and 36 minutes and this is very short. Again, this will not be a problem if you don’t plan to use the Lenovo X1 Thinkpad Carbon Touch for long periods of time but even so you will find that this is quite a short time compared to competitors.

The good news is that while the battery will not last for ages it will recharge really quickly and you will find that this laptop will get back to full battery life in about an hour of charging.

Verdict

The Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch has everything that you need from an ultra-book it is light and has an awesome design and will give you great performance – you may find if you are using video a lot that you will have a problem with the amount of storage and the battery life is not too good.

However, it charges really quickly and the processing speed is definitely not under par.

If you are typing a lot you will also love the keyboard and the display is brilliant as well. In terms of a decent ultrabook where you need something light but also sturdy this fits the bill and we think you will be very impressed with the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch.

If your main needs are an outstanding display and and a slimmer design then you will love the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch and this is definitely one worth looking at.

You will not find many better mid-range ultrabooks and we think you will be very impressed with it!

The only points to bear in mind is the amount of space you have on the drive and also the amount of connectors that you will find are not high on any ultrabook as they need to be light and portable. Plus, a little thing and this will be down to preference but you have to be aware of the slightly different keyboard layout and the way the keys are rounded.

This actually makes it EASIER to type and most people do not have a problem, we would recommend the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch if you have a lot of typing to do as the ultrabook is perfect for that.

All in all a very good Ultrabook with everything that you need.
