The History of Tech: Here’s How Your Favorite Entertainment Came to Be

We humans have a peculiar trait that not many other mammals possess. Our inclination and need for entertainment is largely a part of the fact that social relationships require a variety of interactions to flourish. And our artistic nature is often interwoven into these expressions. Thus, our multifaceted entertainment world exists because of this need.

It wasn’t too long ago when many people accessed all of their news and entertainment through the newspaper or radio. And long before this, theatrical entertainment was often a community affair held outdoors. But times have certainly changed a great deal.

Today, we have entertainment options and advanced tech at our fingertips. And careers in tech and entertainment are some of the highest paying around. But this hasn’t always been the case.

If you’d like to take a trip back in time and see just how all of our favorite tech and entertainment came to be, the following will illustrate a few examples of this progression through history.

The Ancient Past

They may not have had TV, movies, or even a radio. But the ancients knew how to throw a party. And this is evident from Egypt to Greece and in many places in between.

For example, concerning the history of theater, in ancient Greece, most plays were held in honor of the Gods. In fact, the Greeks built massive outdoor structures known as amphitheaters for the sole purpose of this type of entertainment. And in ancient Egypt, entertainers were often a part of noble courts, usually performing dances alongside the playing of music.

While the ancients lacked the technology that we have today, they were all able to witness entertainment firsthand and many of these performances became part of folklore and legend, leading up to William Shakespeare and the first modern stylings of theatrical plays in the 16th Century.

The Not Too Distant Past

Fast-forward to the early 20th Century, and we have entirely different forms of entertainment and several ways to enjoy them. And this is the point in history when our technology truly shaped the path of entertainment going forward.

For example, in the 1800s, the Kinetograph was born and gave us our first video recording experience. However, it wasn’t until 1878 that moving pictures were born. In fact, the first-ever “movie” was “The Horse in Motion.” which captured the movements of a horse on film. And this novel idea bloomed quickly. Within the next two decades, moving pictures became more popular and as technology improved, movies began to be made.

In addition, “movies” of this time period were extremely short, usually lasting mere seconds or often less than a minute. And most were made without sound. Thus, silent films were born.

The Current Era

If we just look at the last 20 years, we can see significant shifts in our own entertainment that’s much more familiar to us. And many will argue that the movie The Matrix changed the industry completely with its never-before-seen effects in 1999. As such, and as digital technology has improved, so have special effects and movie quality. And movies have also grown from a standard 90 minutes to over 3 hours for some of the latest films.

Our current era also offers us greater options than humans have ever seen regarding entertainment. And even though it was only 40 to 50 years ago that modern television took on its familiar role, today we have streaming options in the form of apps that allow for multiple entertainment experiences all on the same device.

For example, apps such as Kodi can be used to download and watch movies and TV shows, play video games, and play music. And with several unique add-ons, you can control a variety of streaming apps all from one central location. Many believe that this is just the beginning.

Toward the Future

A large number of entertainment enthusiasts believe that we’ve only begun to scratch the surface when it comes to how we produce, record, and enjoy our entertainment. In fact, virtual games and holographic software are still in their early phases of development. And if the technological advancement of the last 20 years is any indicator, the sky is truly the limit when we look forward to the next 20 years.

Even the most simple forms of entertainment experience have several options that we can access in the digital format currently. For example, music no longer needs to take up room on our shelves (unless you prefer it that way). Today, we can download thousands upon thousands of songs and store them all on one device.

The future of entertainment isn’t exactly certain. And there’s a great deal of speculation about integrated devices within the body and brain to allow for a personalized virtual entertainment experience. And though this may be another century or two down the road, we need only look to science and technology for the next progression of our uniquely human form of expression in entertainment.
