Need More Mac Memory? Here’s How to Upgrade RAM

How to Upgrade RAM on Your Mac

Many Mac users reach a point where their device becomes hungry for more memory. This typically happens when you start using your Mac for resource-consuming processes (for example, video editing), so the load on random access memory (RAM) increases, which may lead to speed loss and overheating.

Similar symptoms accompany other Mac problems as well, for example, the lack of free space, so before jumping in and investing in new RAM, it’s best to clean your device. You can take steps, ranging from moving your files to the Cloud and optimizing storage to wiping unneeded files and sorting out your desktop and bins. Follow this link for a detailed guide on how to clean your Mac.

If cleaning your device didn’t improve its performance, a RAM upgrade will undoubtedly empower your Mac to perform more tasks. In this post, we will walk you through the steps to upgrade RAM.

Step 1. Compatibility

Many Apple devices aren’t susceptible to RAM replenishing. So, as our first step, you should answer the question of whether your device is upgradable.

  • You can add RAM to Macbook and Pro, released between 2008 and 2011 and between 2009-2012, respectively. Note that with MacBookPro, the upgradable models are 15 inches and 17 inches, without a Retina display;
  • Most iMacs belong to the upgradable models, except 2014 models coming in 21.5 inches and some of the 2015 models;
  • You can also add more RAM to Mac mini, given that it was released between 2010-2012 and in 2018;
  • You can’t add more RAM to MacBook Air, and you should be very careful with iMac Pro. With this model, it’s best to get help from your Apple Service;

If your device isn’t eligible for a RAM upgrade, there isn’t much you can do except buying a model with more RAM.

Step 2. Check the RAM status

Before you move forward with upgrading, you should check how much RAM you already have. To do that, go to the Apple menu and click About This Mac – System Report. Find the Hardware section on the left and choose Memory to determine your Mac’s current memory capacity.

The next step is to find out your actual RAM consumption through Activity Monitor. You can bring it up from the Applications folder – Utilities – Activity Monitor. After you access it, open the memory tab and look for the Memory Used section, which will show you the chunk of memory you’re using now as well as the power-heavy processes.

Checking these parameters will help you make a final decision as to whether you need more RAM. If you’re ready to go with it, let’s move on.

Step 3. Buy RAM

You can get a new RAM module in several ways. The most obvious option is to buy it directly from Apple, but it can be expensive, given that there are other, more affordable options. Another way is to get it from a supplier. You can find plenty of options online, but make sure your new RAM comes with the requisite warranties. Finally, you can get used RAM, preferably from someone you can trust, since getting old RAM online can be risky.

Step 4. Upgrading

If your device falls under upgradable devices, follow the steps below to upgrade RAM on your Mac manually. The process is the same for all device types.

  • Unplug your device and all peripherals (mouse, web camera, accessories, etc.);
  • Shut the device down and let it rest for a while;
  • After it has cooled off, lay it down on the table upside down so that you can access the memory module;
  • Carefully remove the bottom case and put the screws aside in a safe place;
  • Before interacting with the device, you must discharge static electricity from your body by touching your computer’s metal panel.
  • Eject the RAM module using the levers;
  • Extract it while avoiding touching the gold plated connectors;
  • Insert the new RAM module while avoiding touching the gold plated connectors;
  • Make sure the new module is properly inserted. You will hear a click as you press it down in its place, which means it’s in the right place.

That’s all – your new RAM is ready to take your Mac experience to a new level!
