Top Tips to Help You Avoid Computer Viruses

Computer viruses are the bane of the technological era. Anyone who has lost all the contents of their hard drive, or who has had to replace a perfectly good laptop thanks to a virus, knows the pain of which we speak. There are ways to bring your computer back from the brink of virus death, but as most computer technicians will tell you: prevention is always better than cure. With that in mind, we thought we’d share with you some top tips for avoiding computer viruses.

Choose the Right Browser

Before you log in to your casino account and claim a casino bonus, or before you start scrolling through your social media news feed, make sure you’re using a secure web browser. Internet Explorer is not the best choice when it comes to online safety. You are much better off using Chrome or Firefox.

Update Your Computer Regularly

It may be annoying to have to wait for your computer to update and restart, but it is crucial for your online safety. The updates are there to patch up any holes that appear in the security setting of all operating systems. If you don’t allow the update, you are making it easier for a hacker to break into your system. We recommend that you allow your computer to run automatic updates as well as updating any extra programs that you’re using, such as Photoshop or Skype. However, don’t run an update when you are using public WIFI: wait until you get home and can use a secure internet connection.

Install Anti-virus Software

This may sound like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised at the huge number of people that don’t bother. Installing anti-virus software is a must. You only need one anti-virus software, so don’t get carried away and start installing every security software that you come across. You don’t need to live in fear, you just need to be proactive. Be sure to keep your anti-virus software updated.

Avoid Dodgy Websites

By dodgy websites, we mean fake sites that are built to replicate legitimate sites, or sites that are not secured by SSL encryption tech. Avoiding dodgy websites may be easier said than done. Cyber criminals are extremely good at making a website look legitimate. You may think that you are shopping at a site that you use regularly, but you could have stubbled onto a fake that will infect your computer with a virus that aims to steal your data. Always check the URL of the site you’re using. A fake site will have some small difference in the URL that will give it away. Read reviews of any new site that offers a service that you’re thinking of using to make sure that it isn’t a scam. And never ignore a warning that the site you are about to enter is potentially malicious.

Be Wary of Email Attachments

Sending a virus via email used to be the most common mode of attack. These days, email providers like Gmail scan every email attachment for viruses before you can open it, and if a virus is detected, Gmail automatically rejects the email. However, sometimes an email with a virus attached can slip through the net, so it still pays to be on your guard. Never open an email attachment from someone that you don’t know. And be wary of clicking on any link that leads you to an unknown website, even if one of your friends has sent it to you. Sometimes, we can inadvertently send each other links to sites (a funny video, for example, or an amusing news story) that infect our computers because the virus doesn’t have an immediate effect, but by the time we realise we have a virus its too late and we’ve already sent it to all of our friends.
