In October of 2015, Dell released a laptop that got the computer world’s attention. The XPS 15 is one of the most solid builds of any laptop on the market right now, and the technology included with it is what you expect to pay an arm and a leg for. In fact, it’s doubtful that you could even build a computer with the specs that this machine has and still stay under the price it is listed at. Let’s take a look at each of the areas that you want to evaluate a laptop on and see if this should be your next purchase.

Design
What’s wrong with having a tablet instead of a laptop? They aren’t as powerful or versatile. What about getting a laptop instead of a tablet? Well, the laptop isn’t as portable. So before now, you had to pick which one of those two features you valued most. But the XPS 15 Signature Edition is a very good melding of those two things – it is both light and powerful. It is durable without being cumbersome. In other words, it has a darn fine design, sleek and elegant, and perfect for anyone wanting the most performance for the least weight.

Dell XPS 15 9550-4444SLV Signature Edition
Dell XPS 15 has one of the sharpest screens around—with performance and looks to match!
Features
What is so fascinating about this laptop is that the screen size is bigger than the computer build says it can be. They have managed to give you a 15.6” (that’s almost 16 inches!) screen on a 14-inch laptop build. How? A new technology called InfinityEdge display that basically removes all but a sliver of border on either side and at the top of your screen. As for the other features – everything is better.
- The battery lasts for an incredible 10 hours.
- The screen display is Ultra-HD displaying up to 8,000,000 pixels.
- The audio is just as good as the video with high-end sound hardware and software.
- There are lot of ports and all of the standard connectivity features.
- The total weight is less than four pounds!
- There could be some additional ports, like ethernet port
Durability
Okay, so let’s talk durability. You might think that a laptop that is this thin, this portable , isn’t going to have much for durability, but as we mentioned in the intro, that is definitely not the case with the XPS 15. This laptop might look like a fragile piece of art, but it’s actually incredibly solid, built from one single aluminum block. The screen is Corning Gorilla Glass, which means that it protects against scratching ten times better than other models.

Interface & Ports
This XPS 15 has every single port you could want, and probably many that you won’t even need to use. It features three USB ports, one of the a 3.1 Type-C with Thunderbolt, as well as a SD card slot, power slot, battery indicator light, Kensington lock slot, HDMI port, as well as an audio jack for you to plug in your headphones. The keyboard and track pad are great, and you don’t need a lot of time to get the keyboard to respond. Plus, the backlighting makes it easy to work in the dark when you need to.
Performance
The XPS 15 has a lot of configuration when it comes to performance. If you don’t have the budget for the most fully-featured model, then you can go with a processor that isn’t quite as good, and perhaps less RAM. The standard model has the incredible 6th generation i7 Intel processor, superfast and able to tackle endless tasks at once. As for the RAM – the laptop comes with 16 gigabytes, which is more than you need, but you can even put in 32 GB later on if you want to.
Graphics
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 2GB video memory and an Intel HD Graphics 530 integrated are what you’ll find when it comes to graphic performance. What is amazing about this video card is that it doesn’t rank too far from the top of the list of the best video cards available right now. In fact, the card that is ranking at the top of the list right now is the closely related model, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980. What it all comes down to here is that you have enough computing power and video performance to run any game and view videos in the highest quality possible.
Installed Software
Let’s talk about the installed software, because the price of this laptop can be a little hard to justify, even with the performance and processing power that comprises most of it. Luckily, they have included a few extras to make you feel good about the price, like a full year subscription of McAfee LiveSafe, the 64 bit version of Windows 10 and thirty days to use Microsoft Office.

Warranty
Dell is pretty good about standing behind their products. The warranty that comes on this machine is a one-year warranty on the hardware. You have to mail it in to get it repaired and while you have to provide your own shipping container, Dell will pay the freight – both ways. Of course, there are extended warranties and various accessories you can go with if you choose, and the manufacturer warranty might be beaten by the warranty from whatever retailer or online store you are purchasing the XPS 15 from.
Bottom Line
So, the bottom line on the Dell XPS 15. Whether you want to get the top of the line model with the 16 GB of RAM and the i7 6th gen processor or you want to pay a little less and get less performance, this is a good buy. The components alone make it worth the price and they have put it all together in a package that really makes it worth upgrading your computer. So, if you want perfect stability no matter how many programs you have open, or however many tabs you want to keep on your browser, combined with the highest quality video possible and amazing audio, this is the laptop for you.
